A user recently had an issue with the AVAST 2014 firewall. Here is an answer from our support specialist, Peter:

Change firewall sensitivity to "Private" (go to Tools - Firewall). This should solve the issue. If not, open firewall Settings and tick "Internet connection sharing mode" and also tick "Allow all connections with friends when in Private mode" and ensure that following settings in Firewall are allowed:

Settings -> Tools -> Firewall -> Customize -> Policies -> System Rules-> Allow Windows file and printer sharing check enabled
Settings ->Tools-> Firewall -> Customize -> Policies -> System Rules-> Allow Remote Desktop Connections check enabled
Settings -> Tools-> Firewall -> Customize -> Policies -> System Rules-> Allow IGMP traffic check enabled
Settings -> Tools -> Firewall -> Customize -> Policies -> Packet Rules-> Enable windows Networking in and out

You can set up your firewall rules and range of permitted ports in firewall - application rules. Choose the application that you want to change and fill in outbound, inbound port(s), you can choose "Block" for all other communication (or Ask / Auto-decide).
